Australian Scholarships – Australia is an ever emerging destination of choice for students who want to study abroad. There are many benefits of studying in this beautiful country, including the top-ranked universities, high quality education system, beautiful landscapes, and friendly natives. However, when you choose a foreign country for your studies, expense is the first thought. The students applying for their chosen universities abroad look for various scholarship options which could support their studies and other expenses. Scholarships comes as a boon to talented students, especially when they are fully funded. 

The Australian Government and many Australian universities offer fully funded scholarships to international students. Fully funded scholarships imply that all your expenses including tuition fees, living expenses and whatever else you might need for the educational purpose will be provided and completely paid for by the host of that scholarship. The host could be the Australian Government, an educational organization, a university, a private /public organization or even the Australian Embassy. Australian Scholarships – List of Available Government Fully Funded International Scholarships in 2020

Australia Awards Scholarships

Opening/closing dates – Applications open in the first week of February and close on in the last week of April.

Purpose –  In the year 2020, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in Australia plans to offer 1,982 Australia Awards Scholarships and short courses to students from around 50 developing countries (particularly those countries located in the Indo-Pacific region) at an estimated budget of $280 million. These scholarships have been initiated to encourage the international students from these regions to come and study undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the participating universities and TAFE (Technical and Further Education) institutions which are around 55 in number. These scholarships aim at developing the skills and knowledge of the students who would in turn contribute to development in their own countries.

Benefits – These scholarships are offered for the minimum period required by the student to complete the field of study. As a student, you will get the following benefits –  

  • Tuition Fees Full
  • Return travel expense (by air) It would be via the most direct route. You will get economy class airfare and payment for a single return.
  • A one-time payment for accommodation, books and study materials, etc. This is called the establishment allowance.
  • CLE (Contribution to Living Expenses) These are for the basic living expenses and are paid fortnightly at the rate determined by the department.
  • IAP (Introductory Academic Program) IAP is a compulsory program before the starting of your regular course of study. This covers the information on studying and living in Australia. 
  • OSHC (Overseas Student Health Cover) This is given for the duration of the award. OSHC is to cover the students basic medical costs and excludes any pre-existing conditions.
  • PCE (Pre-course English) Fees If required, PCE can be made available for the students.
  • For research courses, single return economy class airfare can be made available for the students who might require fieldwork within Australia or their country of citizenship. 
  • Supplementary academic support to ensure a scholar’s academic success or enhance their academic experience

Eligibility – Students from target institutions in the ten Indian states identified by the India Economic Strategy will be eligible to be nominated. For scholarships commencing in 2020, these institutions are: 

  • Andhra University

Other Eligibility Requirements – Applicants must be chosen by their institution to be considered for this scholarship. Up to 4 candidates can be nominated. Applicants shall be assessed on the basis of their academic excellence, leadership potential and in what ways do they intend to use the scholarship in the future. There is a special consideration given to women, people with disabilities and other traditionally marginalised groups. Nominated candidates must  recognise two preferred courses on their application form and must meet the institutions individual English language and course requirements. 

In addition to these basic eligibility requirements, candidates from India must also meet the following conditions:  

  • be nominated by their institution 
  • be a recent graduate of one of the target institutions, or be about to graduate 
  • hold, or be in the final year of a tertiary-level qualification at least equivalent to an Australian bachelor’s degree  
  • have a relevant academic background in the proposed study program
  • meet admission and other specific requirements of universities in Australia. 

Applicants shortlisted for interview must:  

  • achieve a minimum academic IELTS overall score of 6.5 with no individual band below 6.0 or an equivalent TOEFL or PTE score. 

Special conditions – Scholars are required to return to India after completing their studies. Post the completion of their scholarship, beneficiaries are expected to engage actively in relevant Australia Awards alumni networks and activities.

Australia Research Training Program (RTP) Scholarships

Opening/closing dates – Opening and closing dates of the scholarship vary from one participating university to another. 

Purpose – Block grants are provided to the participating universities through the RTP to support students undertaking higher degrees by research (HDRs) Research Doctorate and Research Masters degree.  In 2020, the Government will provide $1.05 billion through two research block grants programs – the Research Training Program (RTP) and the Research Support Program (RSP).

Benefits – An RTP recipient gets:

  • Tuition fees offset
  • An RTP stipend for the living costs
  • RTP allowances for relocation costs, HDR academic publication costs and also the heath cover costs for the recipients and their dependents. 

In 2020, the full time base RTP stipend rate will be AUD$ 28,092 and the max RTP stipend rate will be AUD$ 43,885. 

The duration of an RTP scholarship is for a maximum of 2 years (research masters) or 3 years up to a maximum of 4 years (research doctorate degree). Each university has its own application and selection process, please contact your chosen university directly to discuss how to apply for the RTP scheme.

Eligibility – RTP scholarships are available to domestic and overseas students enrolled in an accredited HDR course at an Australian HEP. Other eligibilities to be decided by participating universities. Opening and closing dates of the scholarship also vary from one participating university to another. 

ACU Destination Australia International Scholarship

Opening/closing dates – The application deadline is generally in the first week of January. 

Purpose – The Destination Australia Program was initiated to grow and develop the Australian tertiary education providers by  encouraging and supporting both international and Australian students to study in regional Australia. This academic merit scholarship offers financial support to international students at the Ballarat campus for this academic year.

Benefits – 

  • Up to AUD$45,000 grant for students in a three-year course, and $60,000 for students in a four-year course.
  • Payments will be granted in instalments of $7,500 per semester.
  • The Australian Catholic University (ACU) is offering financial support through Destination Australia International Scholarship.

Eligibility – 

All nationalities are eligible. The sponsorship will award for full-time, first-year undergraduate study in any subject. 

To apply, applicants must meet all the following – 

  1. Applicants must agree to live in a regional or rural area in Victoria, as classified by the Rural Remote and Metropolitan Area (PRMA) while studying.
  2. Candidates must have a full unconditional offer by a place in an undergraduate program at ACU, commencing in February 2020.
  3. Students must not have previously studied at ACU. To be considered for this merit award, applicants need to take admission for undergraduate study at the Ballarat campus of ACU. After taking enrollment, applicants will automatically be considered for this academic fund.
  4. If youre an international student currently studying an Australian Year 12 qualification, you may need to apply to ACU through Tertiary Admissions Centre (TAC).
  5. All necessary certified documents like transcripts and completion certificates, passport, evidence of English proficiency, evidence of work experience, professional registration and reference letters. 
  6. Certificate (including IELTS, OET and the ACU English Test), if the applicant is from a non-English speaking country.

Fully funded scholarships by Australian Embassy

Opening/closing dates – Contact the Australian High Commission for application dates. 

Scholarships for undergraduate, masters, MBA, and PhD programs are offered by the Australia Embassy.

University of Sydney International Research Scholarship (USydIS)

Purpose – This scholarship is for Postgraduate, Masters, PhD and Research degree in all subjects at the University of Sydney. Their objective is to enhance the University’s research activities by attracting more overseas postgraduate students to undertake research projects. This scholarship is available for March (Research Period 2) and July (Research Period 3).

University of Sydney Scholarships 2020

  • GENERAL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR BACHELORS AND HONOURS
    • Sydney Scholars India Equity Scholarship – To avail this scholarship, you need to have applied for a postgraduate degree. The grant offered is up to AUD $60,000. 
    • Sydney Scholars India Scholarship Program – To avail this scholarship, you need to have applied for a coursework degree. The opening date to apply is in the first week of April the closing date is in the last week of May. The grant offered is up to AUD $50,000.
    • The Vice Chancellors International Scholarships – are awarded to exceptional international students. The grant offered is up to AUD$ 40,000. The opening date to apply is in the first week of January (Semester 1) and the closing date is in the second week of June. To avail this scholarship, you must – 
      • have applied for but not yet commenced a CRICOS-registered bachelors degree or masters by coursework degree, which is delivered face-to-face (not online) in Australia
      • receive an unconditional offer of admission by the relevant close date.

Adelaide Scholarships International (ASI)

The University of Adelaide Australia, is offering fully funded graduate scholarships for international students. These fully funded scholarships are available for master degree by research (for a period of 2 years) and doctoral research degree (and three years with a possible 6 month extension).  The scholarship includes course tuition fees, annual living allowance ($28,092 in 2020), overseas student health cover plus relocation and publication expenses. 

Eligibility – 

  • Applicants must be international students who are offered a masters or doctorate by research degree at the University of Adelaide. 
  • Applicants are required to provide evidence of meeting the University of Adelaides minimum English language proficiency requirements for direct entry by the application deadline.
  • Applicants with a qualification in progress will not be eligible for consideration until the qualification has been satisfactorily completed (and acceptable evidence provided), or evidence of withdrawal has been provided.
  • Applicants are required to have successfully completed at least the equivalent of a First Class Australian Honours degree. 
  • International applicants must not hold a research qualification regarded by the University of Adelaide to be equivalent to an Australian Research Doctorate degree or, if undertaking a Research Masters degree, not hold a research qualification regarded by the University of Adelaide to be equivalent to or higher than an Australian Research Masters degree.

Scholarships by University of Melbourne

Stipend and fee offset scholarships are provided by the University of Melbourne, Australia with 100% fee remission and up to $110,000. There are three such scholarships currently offered by the university. These are – 

    • Graduate Research Scholarships
    • Research Training Program Scholarship
    • Melbourne Research Scholarships

All three of these are separately available to high-achieving students undertaking graduate research at the University of Melbourne. If your performance is impressive, no application is required to avail this scholarship and you will automatically be considered for this award. 

To be eligible for these scholarships, you need to:

  • have applied for and meet the entry requirements for a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne, or be currently enrolled in a graduate research degree at the University of Melbourne

Selection criteria – Graduate Research Scholarships, Research Training Program Scholarships and Melbourne Research Scholarships that provide a stipend as well as fee offset are awarded to domestic and international students based on their academic merit. The scoring and ranking of the candidates is based on the academic achievement of their last completed degree and their research potential in their field of study. Other factors like  completion of a degree at the same level of the research course for which the scholarship is sought, relevant professional experience, refereed publications, specialist medical qualifications or composition of original music might also be taken into consideration. 

Study Abroad

Benefits – 

  • Full fee offset for up to two years for students undertaking a Masters by Research degree or up to four years for students undertaking a doctoral degree.
  • Living allowance of approximately $30,600 per year pro rata (2019 full-time study rate) for up to two years for students undertaking a Masters by Research degree or up to 3.5 years for students undertaking a doctoral degree. The living allowance may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick, maternity and parenting leave.
  • Relocation grant of $2000 for students moving from States or Territories other than Victoria or $3000 for students moving from outside Australia.
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership for international students who require a student visa to study in Australia.

Opening/closing date -The closing date to apply for these scholarships is generally in the last week of October. 

PhD Research Scholarships by RMIT University

The RMIT University offers fully funded PhD scholarships. The number of scholarships available is 10. Before applying you are required to submit an EOI (Expression of Interest). You will be invited to submit a full application if your EOI is successful. 

Eligibility – You should be meeting all entry requirements for PhD research degree programs. The applicant should have one of these: Research Master degree, Coursework Masters degree, or first class Honours degree. 

Benefits – Full tuition fees, stipend for living expenses, relocation allowance, research support allowance, health insurance for international students, and paid suck, maternity and parenting leave. 

Duration – 3 years. 6 months extension could be available. This would be subject to satisfactory progress. 

Opening/closing date – The EOI must be submitted by the first week of February, while the full application must be submitted by the end of February.
