    What is Abel Visiting Scholarship 2023?

    Abel Visiting Scholarship 2023 is an opportunity offered by the Commission for Developing Countries (CDC) of the International Mathematical Union (IMU)* and is fully funded by the Abel Prize in Mathematics. The Abel Prize recognises pioneering scientific achievements of PhD degree holders in mathematics. This scholarship program facilitates them to visit an international platform as a research collaborator. The duration of the program is initially one month and an extension could be done as per requirement. The program supports post-doctoral mathematicians in the early stage of their professional careers. Selected candidates will receive a grant of up to EUR 4,400 (USD 5,000) for a month and other benefits.

    Who is offering this scholarship ?

    The Commission for Developing Countries (CDC) of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) is offering this visiting scholarship.

    Who can apply for this scholarship ?

    To be eligible, an applicant must -

    • be an Indian citizen
    • be under 35 years of age as of the date of application*
    • be a PhD holder in Mathematics
    • hold a position in a university/research institution
    • be in the early stages of a professional career

     

    *Note - The maximum age limit will be increased by up to three years in case of any gaps in the applicant’s career. However, the applicant needs to mention the reason for the gaps.
     

    What are the benefits ?

    Selected candidates will receive a grant of up to EUR 4,400 (5,000 Dollars).
    Others:

    • Visa fees
    • Travel insurance charges 
    • Travel cost from the place of work of the applicant to that of the host to the extent of economy class airfare.
    • Reimbursement on flight tickets
    • Public transport (surface transport by rail or bus between the nearest city where the airport is located and the headquarters of the candidate or the city/town where the host institution is located, if necessary).
    • Maximum four (4) Taxi fares (on submission of receipts) may be allowed to travel between the home and the airport/railway station (upon arrival and departure).
    • In case the applicant has to stay in a hotel before departure or upon arrival, this needs to be mentioned in the budget details. Maximum one (1) night (both arrival and departure) can be paid from the grant.
    • Basic living cost for the first month (daily allowance based on the living cost of the visiting country/city.This amount includes the cost of public transport and all other living costs).
    • Accommodation cost in the host country (the hotel is allowed if the host provides a statement that no guesthouse or rented flat is available and a maximum of 4 weeks. For staying longer than 4 weeks renting a suitable apartment or guesthouse is required).
    • If the applicant travels during public holidays in the host country and while the host institution is closed, the applicant will not receive basic living costs. However, accommodation costs will be paid.
    • All invoices for travel costs, visa, insurance, accommodation and up to four taxi receipts and all boarding tickets have to be kept by the grantee and be sent (original) to the CDC/ IMU Secretariat by regular mail.

     

    Note - All the accommodation costs will cover for one month and only for the applicant.

    Step 1:

    Step 5: Click on the ‘Register’ option and provide the required information.
    Step 6: After successful registration, fill in the required information, upload the necessary documents in the application form and submit it.

    What are the selection criteria ?

    A selection committee will decide on selecting successful applications. The selection committee will consist of a chairperson selected by the IMU EC, a member selected by the CDC, and a member selected by the IMU EC.

    What are the important dates ?

    Application Start Date – 5th May 2023
    Application End Date - 31st August 2023

    Terms and Conditions

    • A candidate who is not selected can re-apply.
    • Applications must be received at least four months before the desired starting date of the program.
    • Receipts for cash payments for accommodation costs will not be accepted. Applicants need to pay via a trackable transfer method.
    • The grant will be paid in two instalments. The first payment will be made for accommodation in the host country, travel insurance, visa, transport to the airport and 50% of the living cost before departure. The second payment for the remaining living costs will be made after the visit.
