    What is Commonwealth Medical Fellowships 2020, UK?

    The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, UK invites applications for Commonwealth Medical Fellowships 2020 tenable from January 2020. The medical fellowships offer an opportunity for talented and motivated mid-career medical staff from low- and middle-income countries to enhance their clinical skills in order to contribute to sustainable development.

    The selected fellows can benefit from multiple awards including research support, airfare, stipend and other benefits.

    Who is offering this scholarship ?

    The fellowships are offered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) and funded by the Department of International Development (DFID).

    Who can apply for this scholarship ?

    To be eligible, an applicant must:

    • Be a mid-career medical staff
    • Be a citizen of India or any other country
    • Be a permanent resident or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country
    • Have an academic appointment at one of the medical schools
    • Be employed by a hospital affiliated to the medical school
    • Be available to start the fellowship in the UK in October-December 2020
    • Have qualified as a doctor before 1 October 2005
    • Meet the English language requirements of the General Medical Council (GMC)
    • Have verified his/her primary medical qualification independently by the Educational Commission for Foreign
      Medical Graduates (ECFMG) for GMC

    What are the benefits ?

    The fellowship recipients will receive the following benefits:

    • Airfare from the home country to UK and return at the end of the program
    • Research support grant, payable to the host university hospital
    • Monthly stipend of GBP 1696 or GBP 2104
    • The fee reimbursement for the single English language test
    • The fee reimbursement for GMC registration
    • Warm clothing allowance
    • Study travel grant for travel within the UK
    • Allowance of GBP 476 per month for widowed, divorced, or a single parent

    How can you apply ?

    Applications for the Commonwealth Medical Fellowships can be submitted directly to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) through the CSC's online application system. Follow the below steps to apply:

    Step 1: Visit the CSC application portal
    Step 2: Log in using existing credentials or register as a new user.
    Step 3: Validate the email address through the link received on the email to access the application form.
    Step 4: Fill the application form with the required details and upload the relevant documents.
    Step 5: Submit the application.

    What are the documents required for the Commonwealth Medical Fellowships 2020, UK?

    • Copy of valid passport
    • Full university transcripts and certificates
    • Academic reference from the Head of Teaching Hospital Department
    • Endorsement by the Dean of the Medical School
    • Supporting statement from a proposed supervisor in the UK university hospital

    Note: The above-mentioned supporting documents must be submitted through the online application system only.

    What are the selection criteria ?

    The received applications will initially be considered by the CSC’s Medical Awards Administrator with expertise in the subject area concerned. The applications will then be passed to the CSC selection committee who will select the candidates based on the following criteria:

    • Academic merit of the candidate
    • Quality of the proposal (minimum 200 words)
    • Potential impact of the work on the development of the candidate’s home country

    Terms and Conditions

    • The selected fellows will be expected to participate in clinical practice during the fellowship.
    • The size of the documents uploaded on the application portal should not exceed 5MB and should be in either .pdf, .doc, .docx, .odt, .jpg, or .jpeg format.
    • Only one application per applicant will be accepted.
    • Any modifications to an application will count as later submission date.
    • There is no need to apply via a nominating body for these fellowships.
    • The fellowship cannot be held concurrently with any other award.
    • The candidates will be required to submit a medical report before the Confirmation of Award can be issued.
    • The fellows are expected to reside in the UK throughout the award.
    • The fellowship award can be terminated at any time for unsatisfactory conduct or attendance.
