    What is M K Bhan-Young Researcher Fellowship Programme 2024-25?

    M K Bhan-Young Researcher Fellowship Programme 2024-25 is an opportunity offered by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India to PhD degree holders in any branch of Life Sciences/ Biotechnology/allied areas. The scheme offers an independent research grant to young post-doctoral fellows to enable them to emerge as future leaders and take up research focused on issues of national relevance. The selected fellows will receive a consolidated monthly remuneration of ₹90,000 and a research/contingency grant of ₹20,00,000 per annum.

    Who can apply for this scholarship ?

    To be eligible, an applicant must:-

    • be an Indian National
    • be below 35 years of age as of the closing date of the submission of the application
    • hold a Ph.D. degree in any branch of Life Sciences/Biotechnology or allied areas
    • have an excellent track record as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications, technologies developed, patents (if any)
    • not hold a permanent position in any institute/university

    Note:-

    • Students who have submitted their Ph.D. thesis are also eligible to apply. However, a fellowship can be implemented only after the award of the degree.
    • Applicants cannot have more than one fellowship at a given point in time. 

    What are the benefits ?

    The selected fellows will receive the benefits in the following manner:

    Non-Recurring 
    Description  Amount in ₹
    Equipment and accessories Up to an amount of ₹10,00,000 (mostly in the first year)
    Recurring 
    Fellowship  ₹90,000 per month for 3 years 
    One manpower (JRF/SRF/Project Associate/Project Assistant), Consumables, Contingencies, and Travel (Travel expenditure is to be restricted up to ₹50,000 per year.)  ₹10,00,000 per annum (first year), ₹20,00,000 per annum (subsequent years) 

     

    Note:- 

    • MKB-YRFP fellows can apply for research grants from various government agencies, but they can only receive a salary from one source. This means that they can receive research funding from multiple sources, but they can only be paid a salary by one of those sources.
    • The Co-PI, or co-principal investigator, must be a regular faculty member at the institution where the research is being conducted. This is to ensure that the research is being conducted under the supervision of an experienced researcher.

    Terms and Conditions

    • The fellowship is a co-terminus with the project duration..
    • The fellows will submit an annual progress report through the Host Institute.
    • Each candidate can only be nominated by one institute, but institutes can nominate multiple candidates.
    • The duration of the fellowship will be for a maximum period of three years and in exceptional cases, the duration could be extended by another two years on a fresh appraisal. 
    • A letter from the mentor, giving consent to provide laboratory space where the applicant desires to work, should be enclosed with the application.
    • Fellows are not entitled to any kind of salary during the fellowship.
    • If during the fellowship, the fellow finds regular employment in DBT AIs or receives any other fellowship, the applicants should immediately inform the DBT.
