Who can apply for this scholarship ?
To be eligible, an applicant must:-
- be studying human medicine in Germany
- have a good academic record
- be willing to put their study on hold and relocate for their research and work for the duration of the MD Fellowship (at least for 10 consecutive months)
- apply within eight years of obtaining their university entrance qualification
What are the benefits ?
The selected candidates will receive the following benefits:-
- Monthly stipend:
- 1,560 euros (₹1,56,574) in Germany
- 1,885 euros (₹1,89,193) in the UK
- 2,470 euros (₹2,47,908) in the USA
- Travel allowances for:
- Presenting their data at international scientific conferences
- Method courses
- Performing research in cooperating laboratories
- Child care allowance of up to 500 euros (₹50,184)
- Spouse allowance of 200 euros (₹20,073)

Step 3: Applicants must themselves write the application and send it as a single password-protected PDF file with all the specified details at least 3 months prior to the planned start of a research project in the host laboratory at a new location.
What are the documents required for the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) MD Fellowships?
- Letter of motivation
- Certificates for the first section of the medical examination or equivalent exam
- Certificate of University Entrance qualification
- A letter of recommendation from a scientific supervisor at the host institution
- A letter of recommendation from a supervisor at the home university
- An official certificate confirming interruption of studies and clinical activities for the duration of the fellowship from the office of matriculation/ Dean of the concerned faculty of the home institution.
What are the selection criteria ?
Applicants will be selected based on the peer-review process by BIF's Board of Trustees, which includes six internationally renowned scientists working in an honorary capacity. The following parameters are taken into consideration:
- Achievements of the applicant
- Scientific quality of the proposed research project and host laboratory
Note:- The selection process can take up to 3-4 months.
