The Humboldt Research Fellowship is an opportunity offered by Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung to research scholars and scientists. Who can apply for this scholarship ?
To be eligible, an applicant must:-
- hold a doctorate or equivalent (Ph.D., C.Sc., etc.) completed no more than 4 years prior to application for postdocs, or 12 years for experienced researchers.
- submit an application up to 16 years after Master's or Diploma if a doctorate is not possible or customary in the candidate's field/country, provided the publication record matches career stage.
- have academic publications in internationally reviewed journals and by publishers, commensurate with career level post-doctorate
- provide confirmation of available research facilities in Germany, plus a mentoring agreement and detailed expert statement from an academic host at a German research institution
- submit two reviews from key collaborators and/or academics, ideally from the applicant's institute and others (possibly outside the country of origin)
- obtain one review from the doctoral supervisor (typically for postdocs)
- demonstrate good German if required for research in humanities/social sciences/medicine; otherwise, must demonstrate good English.
- demonstrate good German or English in natural sciences/engineering.
- have lived outside Germany for at least 12 months total in the 18 months before application.
- not have self-supported via German institutions for >6 of the last 18 months, or worked on a doctorate in Germany (ineligible if so).
- have primary work/residence abroad permanently for ≥5 years if German national (eligible under this condition).
- not have received prior Humboldt Foundation research fellowship or award (ineligible; use Alumni Programme instead).
What are the benefits ?
The selected candidates shall receive:
- A monthly fellowship of:
- EUR 2,700 for postdoctorates
- EUR 3,200 for experienced researchers
- Subsidised medical and liability insurance
- Lump sum travel expenses
- A family allowance for accompanying partners and/or children under 18 if they stay in Germany for at least three months. The following can be applied for:
- Subsidy to cover the costs of medical and liability insurance for an accompanying partner and/or children under the age of 18.
- A flat-rate allowance for single parents accompanying children.
- Extension of the fellowship for research fellows accompanied by children or during a maternity period.
