UGC Savitribai Jyotirao Phule Fellowship for Single Girl Child (SJSGC) 2022 is an initiative of the University Grants Commission to financially assist any single girl child pursuing Ph.D. programme in any stream. The main objective of this fellowship is to help single girl children in pursuing research work that would lead to the award of Ph.D. degree. The selected candidates will receive up to INR 35,000 per annum, a contingency grant and escort reader assistance for disabled students.
Who is offering this scholarship ?
The fellowship is offered by the University Grants Commission.
Who can apply for this scholarship ?
To be eligible, an applicant must -
- be the only girl child in the family without having any brother or sister
- be 40 years of age (For general category) and 45 years of age (For reserved category) as on the last date of submission of online application
- be pursuing Ph.D. degree in any stream from recognised Universities
- have registered in regular full-time Ph. D. program
What are the benefits ?
The selected fellows will receive the benefits in the following way -

Note - At the end of tenure/termination of fellowship/resignation of scholar, the books, journals and equipment purchased out of the contingency grant shall become the property of the institution concerned.
HRA -
- Hostel accommodation will be provided to the scholars by their institutions. In such cases, the scholar is eligible to draw only hostel fees excluding mess, electricity, water charges, etc.
- The scholar who refuses the hostel accommodation will not be eligible to draw HRA.
- In case of non-availability of hostel accommodation, the scholar will be provided with single accommodation by the host institution. In such cases, the rent paid by the scholar on an actual basis will be reimbursed, subject to the ceiling of HRA as per Govt. of India norms.
- If the scholars make their own arrangements of accommodation, they will be entitled to draw HRA as per the ceiling and categorization of cities by the Govt. of India.
- The scholars are required to submit a certificate in the prescribed format to the institution to draw HRA.
Medical Assistance - No separate/fixed medical assistance is provided. However, the scholars may avail the medical facilities available in their Institutions concerned.

Students can apply for the scholarship using the below-mentioned steps -

Step 3: Fill in all the required details to 'Register'. (Note- If the applicant is already registered, kindly log in using valid credentials.)
Step 4: Fill in all the details to complete the application form.
Step 5: Submit the application form.

- Proof of being single girl child duly attested by SDM / First Class Magistrate / Tahsildar as per the prescribed proforma
What are the selection criteria ?
The candidates will be selected based on the fulfillment of eligibility criteria.
What are the important dates ?
Application Date: 5th September 2022
Application Closing Date: 10th October 2022
Terms and Conditions
- The candidate is eligible to receive only one fellowship at a time.
- A scholar who does not complete the research work during the period of fellowship shall not be eligible to apply again under the scheme.
- The tenure of the fellowship is for five years.
- Under any circumstances, the fellowship will not be extended.
- The candidates are eligible to take 30 leaves in a year.
- An intermittent break of 1 year may also be provided to the women scholars.
- The candidates desirous of leaving the research without the completion of a research degree shall have to submit their resignation to the institution.
- The UGC will terminate the fellowship If the candidate will provide any misleading information.
- UGC reserves the right to terminate the fellowship of any awardee in the following cases -
- If the scholar is found to be ineligible to receive the fellowship, at any point time during the entire duration of the fellowship.
- If it is found that the fellowship has been availed/is claimed by furnishing false/wrong/misleading information.
- If any adverse report is received from the institution.
- Misconduct/misbehaviour/corrupt practices.
- Unsatisfactory progress of research work.
- Violation of terms and conditions of these guidelines.
- Plagiarism or unethical practices, in any form.
- In case the fellowship is terminated/cancelled before submission of a thesis, UGC may initiate the proceedings/take action to recover the amount paid to the scholar along with interest.
